"The Call of Cthulhu" is one of H. P. Lovecraft's best-known stories. Written in the summer of 1926, it was first published in Weird Tales, February 1928. It is the only story written by Lovecraft in which the extraterrestrial entity Cthulhu himself makes a major appearance.
It is written in a documentary style, with three independent narratives linked together by the device of a narrator discovering notes left by a deceased relative. The narrator pieces together the whole truth and disturbing significance of the information he possesses, illustrating the story's first line "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity; and it was not meant that we should voyage far."

Cthulhu pronunciation: KUH - THEW - LOU

H.P. Lovecraft fathered the Cthulhu mythos with this 1928-published short story. It is a 3-part story that follows the discovery of a lost manuscript providing evidence and accounts of a supernatural Thing on the bottom of the ocean... and the ongoing cultism of it all.

Not really a fan of monster stories, but I'm fascinated by how things originate. I liked the spooky atmosphere that gradually built into the horrific... I liked learning more about the Cthulhu following as I've come across it before but never got much background on it. But the writing style is a bit antiquated and verbose and hard to follow at times. I listened to the audio on the second read and that made all the difference... lots of creepy-fabulous voices out there reading Lovecraft's work.

The other things I enjoyed about reading this story is all the monster art out there and all over the reviews... and the occasional flipping out among PC readers regarding the racism in a 1920's story, lol...

The Call of Cthulhu edition by Howard Phillips Lovecraft Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The book that truly started it all. This literary masterpiece proves multiple things. Firstly, the notion that a book must be lengthy to be worthwhile, at only three chapters and forty-nine pages, this book still offers a haunting account of horrors that man could ever conceive.

Secondly, its journal format makes the reader feel so immersed, as if you were truly reading an actual document or journal entry. This format adds a level of fright that could not be achieved in a third-person perspective.

This book is a true example of minimalistic horror that is not seen too often in modern horror novels. Even with a short length and minimal amounts of speech, this book still instills chills into the reader. I highly recommend this book.
This story is of course a classic and probably Lovecraft's most famous work, though personally I enjoyed The Shadow Over Innsmouth's greater immediacy. The Call of Cthulhu gives the reader a detached feeling, since the narrative is conveyed through multiple framing devices (e.g. the narrator is relating his uncle's writings, which includes an encounter with a Louisiana policeman, who tells a tale told to him by a cult member named Castro, who learned of Cthulhu from his experiences in China . . . and so on.)

That's part of the charm, however, as if Lovecraft's overwrought purple prose. The most absurd part in the story was a quoted Australian newspaper article written in Lovecraft's peculiar, xenophobic voice. What kind of journalist would use the phrase, 'a queer and evil-looking crew of Kanakas and half-castes'?

Mostly, the story is important for the genre it birthed, rather than its own merits. It's still a good read, though.
The quality is not the best.
I could have printed out a copy since I apparently use better quality paper.
The editing of the book leaves the text appearing like one very long run on sentence that lasts for 36 pages.
I would not recommend this product for a collector.
It would be acceptable to give to a younger child who you would not expect to take care of their belongings...
With the creation of this tale, came the creation of an entirely new genre, and H.P. Lovecraft absolutely outdid himself with this new fiction tale. Lovecraft conveys a frightening, yet compelling, narrative which delves into ideas that seem almost completely new to mankind. After the protagonist, Francis Wayland Thurston, discovers some of his late grandfather's belongings, he finds himself in a predicament with an ancient deity, named Cthulhu, who has been slumbering for ages, and Thurston becomes wrapped into the cult that follows. While he is most descriptive, Lovecraft also leaves much to the reader's imagination, allowing them to develop this story within their minds instead of just flat-out saying it. While many, including myself, would consider this book outlandish, it is impossible to deny it a place in literature history as a wonderful tale, which challenged common thought and brought new ideas to mankind. With a cliffhanger ending that borders on absolute madness, The Call of Cthulhu delivers in every aspect that it presents within the storyline, and begot a successful series to cement itself into history.
H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) published "The Call of Cthulhu" (February 1928) in the pulp magazine Weird Tales. Surely, the Lovecraftian Mythos at the center of this horror story, narrated by Francis Wayland Thurston, was an inspiration for the mytharc of the television series featuring paranormal investigators Mulder and Scully. Whereas “The Color Out of Space” (September 1927) had the feel of an X-Files monster-of-the week episode, "The Call of Cthulhu," offered a more cosmic perspective, with the now proverbial return of ancient extraterrestrial colonists, or a representative thereof, threatening to bring about the annihilation of humanity, facilitated by a secret society of misguided conspirators who viewed the apocalypse as an opportunity for the chosen few.
I have wanted to read this story for years, and now I'm so glad that I have. I found that the writing style/grammar was a bit "complicated" at first and I had a hard time following the story, but then I purchased the Audible narration. I then listened as I read, in what is called "immersion reading". Now I could pronounce all of the strange words such as "Cthulhu" and "R'lyeh". I was enjoying this strange tail at last and it turns out that I loved it! I now want to read more of Lovecraft, now I know why he is known as a great author. I've had a taste and want more!
